Basic Wardrobe Essentials
Essential Wardrobe Checklist As we move into interview season for many college graduates, its time to take stock of your wardrobe. These are the essential pieces for any career wardrobe. Business Essentials Wardrobe Two Pairs of Dark Pants—must be properly tailored!!!!! 1. Simple skimming cut in a crisp fabric for daytime (lightweight wool or viscose is perfect) 2. Fuller leg pant in a fabric that drapes for a dressier look Three skirts—Be sure that they fit properly and are at knee length or at the top of the knee! 1. Pencil, trouser, or A-line in neutral (black, dark brown or navy) in a crisp material such as lightweight wool or viscose 2. A-line, bias, or circle cut skirt with drape for day and evening 3. Neutral skirt with either a subtle strip or a tweed White button front shirt in high quality cotton (unless you are Sharon Stone, this needs to be well tailored!!!) Shell tops in neutral colors offer a lot of versatility…look for washable options as they will help to stretch your wardrobe Three sweaters (twin sets offer great versatility to the wardrobe in much of the country) Black pants that match your black bottoms Neutral color that is flattering to your skin tone Rich color that “pops” your colors Note: V-necks tend to be the most flattering. Be careful with scoop necks if they show off sun or skin damage. Two Jackets Tailored and neutral to extend your wardrobe. Black or blue is a good option but be certain that the blacks or blues match your pants or skirt! Jacket of tweed or pin stripe. This is a great strategic piece to extend your wardrobe (Hint: This is a good place to spend some money….) Look for something that looks and fits great and is of a sturdy material that is going to withstand a beating. Lots of colors mixed in are great for giving the wearer more options. Be sure that it has a collar that frames your face really well. Little Black Dress (or matching separates that create a dress silhouette) Bodywear Essentials…. Three bras that fit properly (nothing spilling out in the front, nothing showing through, no puckers in the bra, no riding up in the back or straps slipping off of the shoulders, properly supported so that your neck and shoulders are straight, no red marks on your shoulders or under your breasts from a poor fitting bra that rubs) Matching underwear that fits comfortably and does not show seams through your clothes. Spanx, BodyWraps, or control top or just great if they are needed and thongs are great for comfort and reducing bulk under your clothing. Camisoles of a sheer fabric in nude or black can also make great layering pieces. Shoe Must Haves…. Black Pump—Slightly low vamp so that it does not look like a librarian’s shoe but still conservative. An attractive heel is great but no spike heels unless you are working on the set of “The Devil Wears Prada”—BIG HINT…This is a place to spend money. Cheap shoes look bad, feel bad and reflect poorly! Tall Black Boots—In a good or stretch leather. Offers a lot of winter versatility Should not buckle or look wide at the ankle and should mold neatly to your leg. No Cowboy Boots for the Office!!! Good quality flats in a neutral color—Many early career jobs have a certain physical element to them and a good pair of quality flats will give your feet a break from heels without looking sloppy. With my first jobs in banking and sales, I kept a pair of flats in my briefcase because there were times I needed a change by mid afternoon! Ankle boots are often a good option for pants. I absolutely love mine! If you have the urge to wear something wild, make it a scarf, one piece of jewelry or a very high quality accessory. Don’t bling too much or too cheap!!! HAVE FUN SHOPPING!!!!!
